Franceinfo – Burglary at the Louvre: a spectacular robbery, priceless loot
On Sunday, October 19, eight jewels of exceptional heritage value were stolen from the Apollo Gallery of the Louvre Museum. These unique pieces, comprising thousands of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and pearls, are now the focus of a nationwide investigation.
Speaking to Franceinfo, Laure Assumpçao, a lawyer at UGGC, an art market specialist, recalls:
These jewels are highly identifiable, catalogued and photographed, and must be included in all police databases of stolen objects. Resale as is is therefore highly unlikely.
Beyond the spectacular dimension of this burglary, this event sheds light on an often misunderstood reality:
- the theft of works of art and heritage jewelry remains a recurring phenomenon, particularly in regional museums and châteaux.
- transformation of these parts remains the most common method of attempting to erase their illicit origin.
