Les Echos – A ban on the Shein platform in France?

The French Minister of the Economy has threatened to close the French market to the Chinese e-commerce platform, following a report on the sale of child pornography sex dolls.

Shein finds itself more than ever at the center of controversy. Already criticized for Wednesday’s opening of its first physical store in France at the Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville (BHV) in Paris, the Chinese e-commerce giant is facing a new wave of indignation. Following a report from the DGCCRF concerning the sale of child pornography sex dolls, calls for a boycott and the closure of the platform are multiplying.

“Platforms must provide fair information, set up reporting mechanisms that are easily accessible by the user, act quickly to remove manifestly illegal content or verify the identity of third-party sellers. Very large platforms bear additional obligations, such as the annual assessment of systemic risks linked to the use of their services or the appointment of a compliance delegate.”
